Antiques in brief

There will be more than 25 stands at a fair which is always a big draw with holidaymakers. On offer is everything from furniture and art to silver, glass, porcelain, vintage items and accessories. Openfrom 11am to 6pm.


There will be an antiques and general auction at the Old Transport Museum at Slane in Co Meath tomorrow at 1pm. Matthews of Oldcastle will offer over 750 lots including furniture, porcelain, silver, and plate as well as gilded mirrors.

A curiosity in the sale is a bronze Japanese hand mirror from the Tokugawa period 1603-1867 (below) which reflects pictures onto a white screen. It is estimated at €250-€350. Viewing is from 11am to 5pm today and from 10am tomorrow.


An upcoming sale at Cork Auction Rooms on October 2 features over 400 lots guaranteed to excite the railway enthusiast.

There are cast iron signs, enamel station signs, signals, uniforms and railway lamps, mostly relating to England, but with Irish interest too.


The artist Geraldine O’Sullivan will hold her annual summer exhibition today and tomorrow at Ballylibert, Castlefreke. Signs to the show are in place from Clonakilty and Rosscarbery.

As well as garden paintings and seascapes there will be a preview of an upcoming exhibition of The Letters of 1916 scheduled for St Peter’s Church, North Main St, Cork from October 12 to November 9.

Based on letters from a public digital database of 2,400 letters written during the Easter Rising and the First World War, the show has already been seen in New York as part of Culture Ireland’s celebration of 100 years of Irish culture. Opening times are 11am to 6pm today and tomorrow.


Art collectors found bargains at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online sale of affordable art on Monday.

A watercolour by Sean O’Sullivan RHA (1906-1964) entitled A Coastal Path sold for just €120, Night at the Local by Shane Johnson made €950, The Table Setting by Neil Shawcross sold for €800, a poster of Strindberg by Louis le Brocquy made €260 and Still Life with Jugs by Stella Steyn sold for €420.

The Flea Market by Arthur Maderson sold for €4,000 and Summer Time by Graham Knuttel made €1,200.


There will be a fine jewellery and silver auction at John Weldon, Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin at 2 pm Tuesday.
