Limerick FC have been in the news a lot lately with former manager Sam Allardyce being announced as the new England manager and the Shannonside club's 19-game unbeaten league run raising a few eyebrows.

Well, word seems to have spread even further as Limerick welcomed a special guest to the Markets Field on Friday night as they beat Shelbourne 2-0 to consolidate their 20-point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Former Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan legend Michael Essien graced the pitch at full-time to present the man of the match award to Limerick captain and goalscorer Shane Duggan.

Capped 58 times by Ghana, Essien currently plays in Greece with Panathinaikos and won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League in a nine-year stay at Chelsea.

Essien clearly enjoyed himself in Limerick and took to Twitter to thank the club and chairman Pat O'Sullivan.
