Stranger Things is going down a storm with Netflix audiences, with the atmospheric 80s set show managing to really capture the style of the decade.

It does that in a number of ways including awesome production design and that delicious score by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein and it also conjures up the era by liberally referencing other movies and shows from the time, and in some cases straight up borrowing elements or shots.

Here's a look at a few of the major influences.

Honestly, while I enjoyed Stranger Things well enough, particularly the early and later portions of the series, I'd go further to suggest that the show often bypasses homage and blatantly copies many of these other productions. In that way, it gets a bit of a free helping of nostalgia, which disguises how simplistic the show actually is.

Now that's just my opinion, but I'm still hoping that creators The Duffer Brothers manage to bring a little more originality to a proposed second series.
