Officer David Gomez has been hailed a ’hero’ for not drawing his gun on two ’vicious’ dogs that were loose in a residential area.

When he initially arrives at the scene, the dogs come running towards him and begin barking and circling him.

One of the dogs is clearly foaming at the mouth.

The officer used a folding baton to distract the dogs and waves it in front of them to deter them from attacking him.

Gomez keeps his calm throughout and goes into dog dad mode, even asking the dogs to sit.

"Shh... shh... sit," he urges the dogs.

The New York Post stated: "Officer Gomez isn’t a dog whisperer, he’s a dog commander."

In 2014, the Meridian Police Department sent two officers to the class Defensive Tactics Canine Encounters, which teaches officers a use of force continuum and confidence in less lethal means during canine encounters, while still keeping the officer, innocent bystanders and the public’s canine companions from harm.

Gomez put to the test what he had learned.

He said: "This is the first time I’ve gone where the dog actually came at me aggressively."

"The best thing is that they (people) realise that not all police officers are going to shoot dogs."
