Netflix will be the home for Star Trek fans with plans for all of the older episodes and the new series to hit the service very soon.

There's a new Star Trek show coming in 2017 and it's going to be a major event, at least in North America where it's going to stream on CBS video service. For everyone else, it wasn't clear how they were going to get to see it, but now Netflix has come to the rescue.

The streaming giant has signed a landmark agreement with CBS Studios to debut the new Star Trek series in 188 countries around the world, promising to have a new episode live less than 24 hours after its premiere.

It's hard to get across how massive a deal this is, with a old style TV network like CBS working hand in hand with the new upstart. It's great new for the creative sorts who will have a massive audience for the new episodes and it's the best case scenario for fans who will be looking forward to seeing Star Trek again.

And the great news doesn't stop here as this agreement also makes it possible for the older episodes to appear on Netflix. That's right, every single moments from The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise will be made available - that's 727 episodes in all!

Legacy Star Trek will be on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016. The new Trek show will debut its pilot episode on TV in the US in January 2017 before going online and the first season will run for 13 episodes. No cast has been confirmed yet but it will be run by Hannibal's Bryan Fuller.
