This kid offered a famous Limerick painter a tenner for his painting

Limerick is currently bidding to be the European Capital of Culture in 2020 and yesterday, as the judges arrived, there was a city-wide celebration, with events highlighting all the different elements of Limerick’s culture - including art.

Abstract landscape artist John Shinnors is one of Limerick’s most famous painters - some of his larger works have been valued at €250,000.

So he’s a pretty big deal.

As part of the festivities, Shinnors was painting in the green area being behind the Hunt Museum with fellow renowned Limerick artists when one kid saw an opportunity.

Seven-year-old AJ Hannafin offered the artist a tenner for the painting he was working on - and Shinnors accepted!

Darren Ryan, who caught the moment on camera, told breakingnews.ie that AJ plans to hang it on his bedroom wall - proof that cultural appreciation (and an eye for a bargain) can start at any age.

And Limerick’s best ambassadors, the Rubberbandits helped the story go viral, posting the photo to their social media with the caption:

"This here sums up ?#?Limerick2020? party in the City today. The lad in the hat is world famous Limerick artist John Shinnors. His paintings have sold for a quarter of a million. A cheeky youngfella walked up and offered him a tenner for a painting he was working on, and shinnors sold it to him. For a tenner."
