Watch this squirrel pull off miracle escape from a hungry hawk

Wildlife enthusiast John Dunstan captured an incredible moment while videoing some hawks in a New Jersey park last month.

Dunstan, who runs the Wild Jersey City Facebook page, watched on as squirrel somehow escaped a life-and-death struggle with a hawk in the city’s Lincoln Park.

The clip follows the bird of prey as it frantically scrambles into a tree after the squirrel apparently got to near too its nest.

Just when it looks like there is no escaping for the squirrel, it unbelievably manages to leap high into the air over the hawk and land on the branches below to get away.

John’s super slow motion effect on the footage makes it all the more glorious to watch.

Was that an ’S’on the squirrel’s chest?

John told the Daily Mail that it was the first incident of its kind he’d seen in ten years of wildlife filming.

"It was absolutely fascinating seeing this escape. This is the first time I had seen a squirrel leap away from a hawk like this," said John.

"Normally when I have seen them together, the hawks have been on the ground eating squirrels.

"I was recording the hawk as there is a nest hidden in the tree top and a chick had just fledged. I had no idea what I had recorded until I uploaded the card to my computer."
