New Tomb Raider movie has a release date

Angelina Jolie made for a pretty kickass Lara Croft in two movies, and now a new star is taking over the role. Alicia Vikander, who is in everything at the moment, will be playing the Tomb Raider herself in a film that will reboot the franchise.

The new Tomb Raider will take cues from the recent reboot of the game series, with a younger Lara before she's really got to grips with raiding those tombs. Norweigan director Roar Uthaugis at the helm making his English language debut and we've just heard that the film will debut in March 2018.

That's a good way off, likely partly due to how busy the Swedish actress is. She's also never had a role in an action film before, so there'll probably be some serious training over the next few months.

Tomb Raider is currently in pre production, with no word on the rest of the cast. If it directly follows the game reboot the story could revolve around some pretty dark adventures when Lara becomes stranded on an island after a terrible boat crash, but we'll have to wait and see.
