Minecraft movie gets release date

Minecraft is on every platform imaginable, taking over screens of all shapes and sizes. But now it has another screen size in mind; it’s coming to the big screen.

Mojang announced that the Minecraft movie, which is as yet untitled, will be released on May 24, 2019. It will be released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX.

It’s early days yet, so Mojang doesn’t have a lot to share at this point in time. A statement on Mojang’s website reads: "Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right? That's it for now, but as time goes on we'll share loads more. Loads!"

However, we do know that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney is on board to direct.

Producer Roy Lee previously hinted at the direction that the movie is heading. "Minecraft would be part of a multiverse that humans can enter, that has the feel of a live-action version of a Minecraft experience," he said. "[We're going for] the same target audience as Jurassic World," he told Collider.
