Destiny players on old gen won't get new content
However, not all Destiny players are created equal. It has been confirmed that the upcoming expansion Rise of Iron will only release on current gen systems. That means those who are running the game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 can't play the new content, which is a pretty clear sign that they're going to be left out in the cold as the releases continue.
Around 90 percent of Destiny players are said to be on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which gives the developers even less incentive to continue to support the older platforms. In the run up to the release of Rise of Iron in September 2016 last gen players will start to be left out of certain events, including the Trails of Osiris weekly Crucible events and several live events.
Now Destiny has content that's cycling all the time so it's not like last gen players are going to log in tomorrow to see an empty game. It is however a sign of what's coming, so if you're an avid fan playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 it might be time to considering upgrading to a newer system. The good news in that regard is that you'll be able to keep your character, provided you're moving to the same platform family - ie PlayStation or Xbox.
Rise of Iron is out on current gen platforms on the 20th of September, 2016.
