One of the rumours in the run-up to Apple’s WWDC 2016 was that the company might make iMessage available on Android. That didn’t happen and an Apple exec has revealed why – and it’s not all that surprising.

An unnamed executive told The Verge that keeping iMessage restricted to iOS devices helps sell more iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Simply put, porting the messaging app to Android would mean that there would be one less reason to buy an iPhone rather than an Android handset.

This person also said that Apple has more than a billion active devices to work with, giving it plenty of data to analyse to determine how the AI behind Apple’s messaging services could be improved.
