Antique dealers and lovers of art head for Limerick Fair

National fair should draw a large summer crowd of browsers and buyers, says Des O’Sullivan.

Antique dealers and lovers of art head for Limerick Fair

LIMERICK is the place to be this weekend as antique dealers and treasure-hunters converge on the city for the National Antiques Art and Vintage Fair.

Highly-prized rarities on offer will include a superb c1750 Limerick Silver bowl by Collins Brehon, a maker whose work hardly ever turns up for sale, at Weldons.

A c1830 cut glass Irish bowl from Brian Hurley of Kinsale, virtually identical to one featured in the Warren Phelps book on Irish glass, and an English feather pelerine at Charles Vivian art and antiques will also be on sale.

This pelerine is a rare and beautiful survivor of an accessory that became fashionable for a short period in the late 1820s/early 1830s after the visit to England of the King and Queen of Hawaii.

With antique furniture, Irish art, vintage fashion, tin plate toys, coins and currency, silver, glass, porcelain, antiquarian books and a huge range of collectible items, this fair has thrived over the 26 years since it was first held at the old Jury’s Hotel on Ennis Road.

On offer are a range of large and small items across various price points from cheap and cheerful to downright unaffordable.

More than 100 dealers will be in attendance at the South Court Hotel for what is the biggest fair on the annual calendar of Hibernian Antique Fairs.

Opening times are from 11 am to 6 pm today and tomorrow.
