Trend of the week: Floral prints

This season, floral prints are in full bloom, says Annmarie O'Connor.

Trend of the week: Floral prints

INSPIRATION

Spring summer bears a retro-inspired hallmark with existing trends repurposed and redefined. Expect florals to come into full expression with a distinct`50s Americana edge. Hawaiian shirts and stovepipe trousers make fitting friends with bomber jackets and board shorts adding a sepia tinge to brighter days.

STYLE HACKS

FIND YOUR FOCUS: Make like Valentino and choose one key piece around which to build a look, making sure to incorporate tone-on-tone hues for a cohesive front.

TONE IT DOWN: Dilute bold, bright prints with neutral colour blocking. Combine with coffees and creams; greys and navy to adjust the dimmer switch.

DO DETAIL: Shirt collars, piping and considered motifs tap into trend without full floral commitment. Likewise ties, skater pumps and baseball hats make smaller sartorial demands.

TOTALLY TROPICAL: Say ‘aloha’ to the Hawaiian tiki shirt. Button-up with slimline trousers or wear open over a t-shirt a la Harry Styles.
