Pitch Perfect 3 pitchslapped into late 2017

The Pitch Perfect series is set to continue next year with a third entry, once more bringing back director Elizabeth Banks and a lot of singing stars.

But while the show was originally aiming for a summer 2017 release, it has now been delayed to December. There's no reason given for the change right now but it doesn't sound like anything negative is going on.

Now that move puts the second sequel right in the firing line next to the second weekend of Star Wars Episode VIII. That's some pretty stiff competition but it's not the first time the series has gone up against a blockbuster. Pitch Perfect 2 came out the same week as Mad Max Fury Road, where the comedy about lots of singing managed to score almost double the domestic gross of George Miller's action epic.

Partly that was down to the fact that there isn't a lot of crossover between the major audiences for both of these films, and both went on to become hits in their own right. Star Wars is a very different proposition, capturing pretty much all ages and demos, so we'll have to wait and see how that works out.
