This will appeal to budding and not-so-budding artists as it does not overwhelm them with the author’s own brilliance.

The method used is observe, imitate, and then create.

You don’t need to leave your home to look for creative inspiration.

As demonstrated, simply copying the shapes of a set of cutlery and adding a few squiggles will create The Spork Family.

On the opposite page then the reader is encouraged to invent a different group of people.

Who would have thought that an everyday electric light bulb would float effortlessly as a hot air balloon?

Clothes pegs prove to be similar in shape to alligators and crocodiles.

A page with multi-coloured sets of eyes invites young artists to create weird and wonderful faces.

All you need for endless fun is this book and a pencil.

Suitable for age six and upwards.

The Best Medicine by Christine Hamill (Little Island, €8.80)

Philip Wright’s life has become quite complicated and worrying.

His mother has definitely changed — she has begun a new diet which involves porridge and even wholemeal bread.

But more alarmingly, she is now prone to fits of emotion and extreme moodiness.

Frequent visits from her sister Susie are even more mysterious for Philip as she won’t divulge what is going on.

School has become a battle ground of emotions as well. He has fallen for one Lucy, aka the goddess, and has considered showing her a poem written in praise of her.

His teacher now assumes that he is a poet in the making.

His new friend Ang is a consolation, but when he seems to drift into the company of a bully whom he christens Yeti, Philip feels betrayed.

When his mother’s symptoms worsen, he bombards Harry Hill with a one-way correspondence — the only real outlet for his mixed-up feelings.

The author’s lightness of touch makes this a very commendable debut novel.

Suitable for age 12 and upwards.
