Trend of the week: Irish summer fashion

INSPIRATION

The Irish summer is like an inconstant lover. We look forward to her arrival but don’t put too much faith that it’ll all be sunshine.

Should things suddenly get chilly, it’s comforting to know a few sartorial bases are covered: a light coat to cover that sleeveless dress; a bag in which we can deposit our sunglasses and sandals.

Consider it a sleight of hand should a ‘grand soft day’ drop by.

STYLE HACKS

COVER UP: The soft trench is a seasonal staple not least because of its multi-tasking nous. Wear it belted or draped over the shoulder with just about anything for instant chic.

BE NATURAL: Rising mercury calls for breathable fabrics. Look to linen (or linen blends), silk crepe, cotton and cotton twill where possible for that easy, breezy feel.

LOVE LAYERS: Playing with lengths not only gets more mileage out of tricky hems but adds texture to any look.

Pair your tunic dress with trousers or midi skirts on cooler days. Do likewise with cropped knits over long shirts and tissue-thin polo necks under shirt dresses.

PUT IT IN NEUTRAL: Afraid to do head-to-toe summer hues? Get more mileage out of your neutrals (especially cream, white and camel) with darker, more practical pairings like navy, black and soft grey.
