Beauty clinic: SPF creams

Q. Can you recommend a sophisticated SPF cream I can share with my toddler? I could really use the bag space.

Beauty clinic: SPF creams

A. Any broad-spectrum sun protection (SPF25 or higher) that employs zinc and titanium oxides is ideal for you and your child, as skin is generally highly tolerant of both sunscreens.

It is important to check your cream is alcohol-free even if the label says it is sensitive-skin safe.

Beauty brands often pour lots of alcohol into SPF products because it makes them feel lighter and speeds absorption, but it also strips the skin of moisture and causes irritation and sensitivity.

Sunscreen-sprays are convenient, but the dispensation method can leave you inadequate or uneven coverage.

A bottle or tube is the better choice.

You will have to reapply every two or three hours, so once you’ve got safety sorted it’s about the added benefits.

Shiseido Expert Sun Protection SPF 50+ WetForce for Sensitive Skin & Children, €41, is water and perspiration-proof.

The formula is highly fluid and alcohol-free, so both safe and quick to apply on a squirming toddler.

The zinc and titanium oxides give it a white-ish case, so while it is fine to wear on the face, you may not wish to do so without makeup.
