EA initially rejected Battlefield 1's WW1 setting

During EA’s investor day, he said that he turned down the World War 1 setting for the next Battlefield because he didn’t think that it would be fun. "It wasn't the most obvious choice," he said.

"I said, World War I, it's trench warfare, it can't be fun to play."

He added, "If you look at what other partners in the industry are doing, they're going into sci-fi. We've had a lot of success in the modern military space. But we felt like there was a need for a change.”

DICE wasn’t willing to give up though. It put together a demo to showcase the setting and managed to convince Söderlund that it was the right call.

Battlefield 1 is scheduled for release on October 21, 2016.
