Twitter to drop links and photos from character count

Twitter is reportedly planning to drop links and photos from its 140-character limit on tweets in a bid to make the service easier to use.

There are times when you want to provide comment on a link you’re sharing, but that very link is taking up precious space in your tweet. That may no longer be a concern in the near future, as Twitter is planning to exclude links and photos from the 140-character limit.

According to a Bloomberg report, this change will be announced in the next two weeks. Currently, links typically take up 23 characters of a tweet, while photos take up to 24 characters. That leaves considerably less space for comment.

CEO Jack Dorsey appears to want to make the social media site easier to use without abandoning its trademark 140-character limit. The service has faced stagnant user growth, but Dorsey has promised that it will take steps to attract new users.

During Twitter’s February earnings call, he said, "We think there's a lot of opportunity in our product to fix some broken windows that we know are inhibiting growth.”
