A question of taste - Sinéad Ní Uallacháin

Sinéad Ní Uallacháin is from Baile an Éanaigh, in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. She presents the weekday morning radio show, Sinéad ar Maidin, on Raidió na Gaeltachta, (10.15-11am, Mon-Fri).

A question of taste - Sinéad Ní Uallacháin

In her spare time, she likes to act and is involved with a few drama groups in both Dublin and Kerry.

Best recent book: I’m really enjoying dipping in and out of Kerry poet, Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh’s latest poetry collection, Tost agus Allagar. I was at the Dublin launch of the collection, in Club Chonradh na Gaeilge, recently, and heard Ailbhe herself recite some of her compositions. My personal favourite would have to be ‘Nithe Ceilte’, a poem about her encounter with a deli worker in West Harlem.

Best recent film: I shed a few tears when I saw Brooklyn, not so long ago, which is always a good sign. However, I’m not sure if it was entirely because of the film, or if I was spurred on by the woman who was sitting next to me, blubbering throughout.

Best recent gig: The inaugural Nós Music Awards took place in the Sugar Club in January for contemporary Irish language acts. It was one of the best gigs I’ve been to in a long time! I’m also really looking forward to Ravelóid, this summer — a festival that will celebrate today’s Irish language culture. Bring it on!

What formats do you access music? I’m pretty old-school. I love CDs and especially all the information, pictures and lyrics, etc, in the sleeve notes.

Best piece of music you’ve been listening to lately: I’m listening to ‘Cucanandy’, (from The Gloaming’s latest album), on repeat for the past few days.

First-ever piece of music or art or film or gig that really moved you? My favourite film, for a long time, was A League of Their Own, with Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna and Tom Hanks. I saw it recently again — I know, I don’t know what I was thinking, either!

The best gig or show you’ve ever seen: I saw the Broadway production of The Curious Incident of Dog in the Night-time last summer. I’m still thinking about it.

TV viewing: I love watching the soaps, especially Eastenders. I quite like quiz shows, as well — reruns of The Weakest Link, or Catchphrase, are right up my street. Keith Lemon’s shows are great, also.

Radio listening: Cormac ag a Cúig, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, and The John Creedon Show on RTÉ Radio 1!

Name three of your broadcast heroes: Helen Ní Shé, Graham Norton, and Holly Willoughby.

Your best celebrity encounter: I met Don Conroy on Ventry beach, when I was about 12. I don’t think I’ve been as excited to meet anyone since.

Most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought: A bridesmaids dress for my sister’s wedding, last year. It wasn’t OTT crazy expensive, but I suppose I don’t spend that much money on clothes, in general.

Tech habits: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for keeping in touch / networking. I like buying and selling on Depop, also.

Unsung heroes: My Mam and Dad,

You are queen for a day — what’s your first decree? Three-day weekends.
