Spotify developing 12 original shows

Music streaming service Spotify seems to be eyeing up the Netflix model of not only offering content, but producing original content too. It has twelve shows reportedly in the works, all revolving around music.

Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons and his production company, All Def Digital, are to produce a reality competition series called Rush Hour. This will see hip-hop artists tasked with creating a collaborative piece on the fly that will then be performed live.

Actor Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) will produce a mockumentary series about a fake competition set up to uncover the world’s next dance music star.

There’s also a documentary series called Landmark, which will cover major moments in music history. The first two episodes will focus on the rise of Metallica and the creation of The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" album.

Spotify may even delve into collaborations with artists on upcoming albums, as well as comedy and animation series.
