Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon Runner of the week: Stephen Rooney

Name: Stephen Rooney

Age: 41

Is it your first time running a marathon?

No, this will be marathon number 7

Why are you running the marathon this year?

I completed the Greater Manchester Marathon in April, so I decided to run Cork as most of the training has been completed already.

What’s your training/diet regime like?

I usually run three days a week and take a spinning class also. I try to eat a varied healthy diet that includes fish, chicken, turkey, vegetables, fruit, and nuts as well as lots of carbs.

Hardest part so far?

The hardest part for any runner is being injured. It’s the worst feeling watching others running whilst injured.

Best part so far?

Crossing the finishing line in a marathon or any race, is the best part of running.

One piece of advice to anyone thinking of doing it in the future?

Engage in some strength and conditioning exercises that are related to running. This will help you to become stronger and avoid injuries.
