Avedon’s ‘real’ Marilyn Monroe

According to the celebrated mid 20th century fashion photograph Richard Avedon this is an image of the real Marilyn Monroe.

Avedon’s ‘real’ Marilyn Monroe

“For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that’s.... she did Marilyn Monroe.”

Avedon described how, when the night was over, she sat in a corner like a child.

“I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn’t photograph her without her knowledge of it.

“And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no.”

Estimated at £30,000-50,000 the image comes up at Sotheby’s on May 19.
