Tried and tested: Mascaras

Rimmel London Volume Colourist Mascara in Black, €9.99 ( www.boots.ie )

After the suggested two-week wear of this tint-meets-mascara, my lashes did appear darker and more volumised, and the brush fulfils its promise of making lashes fuller and longer. However, on a number of occasions, I was left with remnants of black under my eyes, which I had to tend to during the day.

Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara in Black, €15.99 ( www.boots.ie )

This mascara delivers super-long lashes, but it took me a bit of practise to get used to the long and thick wand, which meant I had to spend more time with a lash comb, removing clumps. That said, when applied well, the results are great.

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Knockout Defining Lifting and Fan Mascara in 01 Black, €30 ( www.brownthomas.com )

With a wand that’s thicker in the centre, and short, sturdy bristles, the brush pushes lashes out and up, opening the eye more with each stroke. The ‘fan’ effect is really noticeable, but I would have preferred a bit more volume.
