Twitter decides to keep 140-character limit

Twitter will be sticking with its 140-character limit on tweets despite rumours that it would be upping it to as much as 10,000 characters.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey appeared on The Today Show to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary. While there, he shared news about the company's policies and stances.

On the 140-character limit, Dorsey said, "It's staying. It's a good constraint for us. It allows for of-the-moment brevity."

He also spoke about how the company balances freedom of speech with clamping down on harassment. "Twitter's always been about controls. People can follow whoever they want. And it's our job to make sure they see the most important things and the things that matter to them," he said.

"There are tweets that promote violence, which is against our terms of service, so people have controls to block and people have controls to mute," he added. It looks like it'll be up to users to safeguard themselves for a while longer.
