Auction of a range of contents from Adare Manor next week

An on-the-premises auction at Adare Manor Hotel will take place next Thursday and Friday.

The hotel and golf resort finally shut its doors yesterday for a refurbishment which will take an estimated 18 months to complete.

Limerick businessman JP McManus, his wife Noreen and the McManus family bought the hotel for a reported €30 million a year ago. It is understood that he wants to turn the golf resort into an Augusta of Europe.

Doneraile-based auctioneer, Aidan Foley will offer 1,400 lots from the manor and the golf clubhouse over two days next week.

Among them is the 19th century walnut reception desk from the hotel lobby, about a dozen stuffed deer heads, some glass and brass chandeliers and three baby grand pianos.

There are desks, dining tables, chairs, dining room equipment and furniture, pairs of wing back armchairs from the oak drawing room, coffee tables, glassware, serving dishes, large silver-plated candelabra, kitchen contents and all the clubhouse bar furniture.

There will be curtains, carpets, lamps, lighting, mirrors and paintings.

Auctioneer Aidan Foley, who conducted the sale of Ashford Castle’s contents when that five star hotel was being refurbished, said: “There has to be something here for everybody”.

At the time of writing, he is still discovering more lots, such as a late Victorian pitch pine pantry table measuring 10’ x 4’ which emerged from the stables.

The contents of about 30 of the bedrooms were purchased by another hotel in a private deal, but the sale will include the entire contents from bedrooms such as the State Room and the Presidential Suite.

Viewing is from 10.30am to 5pm next Tuesday and Wednesday. The auction is at 10am on Thursday and Friday, with around 700 lots to be sold on each day. The sale will be live online with

There is likely to be a second auction with more contents later in the year.
