A question of taste: Ian Lloyd Anderson discusses his favourite things

Ian Lloyd Anderson is from Baldoyle, Co Dublin, and performs in dance music tale, Dublin Oldschool, in the Project theatre from January 13 to 16. He also played Dean in Love/Hate, and takes the role of Jack Clitheroe in The Abbey’s forthcoming production of The Plough and the Stars.

Best recent book: Last Train To Memphis, The Rise of Elvis Presley. Weird choice as I’m not a big Elvis fan but really enjoyed it.

Best recent film: Ida. Polish film. Beautifully shot.

Best recent show/exhibition/gig you’ve seen: The Gigli Concert by Tom Murphy at The Gate. I’m a huge fan of Mr Murphy and saw this production twice. The performances from the three actors are outstanding.

What formats do you use to access music? It depends. I listen to a lot of my music on YouTube because it’s easier to access acoustic versions of songs.

Best piece of music you’ve been listening to lately (new or old): I’m constantly listening to The Dubliners. I listen to a lot of Irish music. Cry Monster Cry, for my money, are the best Irish band on the scene at the moment.

First ever piece of music or art or film that really moved you: John Prine’s song ‘Jesus, The Missing Years’.

Tell us about your TV viewing: I’m not a great TV buff. I just watch football all weekend. I end up watching the soaps with my wife while I’m watching a match on my iPad.

Radio listening: I couldn’t survive without the radio. I have it on all the time. I listen to anything.

Name three of your acting heroes: Paul Giamatti, Lee J Cobb, Daniel Day Lewis.

Your best celebrity encounter: Richard Branson was at the last show I did and he hung back to say hello and buy us a drink. Nice fella.

Tech habits — what you use and what you use it for: My iPad for tunes and footy.

Unsung hero — individual, organisation or group you think don’t get the praise they deserve: I think suicide prevention organisation Pieta House are amazing. They’re a charity I’d hope to do some work for in the future.
