1. Now for the Science Bit

The country’s most spectacular science and technology showcase will open to the public from Thursday until Saturday at the RDS in Dublin as the 52nd annual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition rolls into town.

The exhibition will incorporate the 550 secondary school student projects that were shortlisted from more than 2,000 entries for display at the event.

Tickets are available at the door costing €6 for students, €12 for adults and €25 for a family pass which includes 2 adults and 2 children. Also visiting is Celestial Voyage 3D who will bring the audience on a captivating journey of the Solar System from the International Space Station to Planet Mars using the latest in 3D technology and visualisation. or

2. Coppers for Copper

Irish Guide Dogs (right) is urging the public to donate 1c and 2c coins to support the training of Copper, a future assistance dog for a child with autism. An assistance dog is the same breed, age and temperament as a Guide Dog and is trained especially to work with a child with autism and their family.

Assistance dogs work with children with Asperger’s, children with autism and children who are on the autistic spectrum.

Copper is currently in the Early Training Unit at Irish Guide Dogs’ HQ and Training Centre in Cork.

She will next progress to advanced training before being matched with the family of a child. Details on how to donate are on the organisation’s website

3. Culture Vultures

Fancy dinner with the Phantom at Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa, Co Meath on Friday January 15? David Shannon has spent the last 20 years playing leading roles in London’s West End including the title role in Phantom of the Opera.

Next Friday he will be providing an evening of songs from these shows at Dunboyne Castle Hotel, where guests will be entertained before, during and after their four-course dinner at 8pm.

Beginning with a special performance from Phantom of the Opera and continuing with selection of hits from some of the greatest musicals including West Side Story, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia and Les Misérables, this promises to be a night to remember for all musical devotees. Tickets cost €69 per person sharing for dinner and show, with guests seated at shared tables. Special overnight packages including dinner and show are also available costing €135 per person sharing.

4. Ice Ice Baby

If you haven’t gone yet, it may be your last time to get your skates on before the seasonal ice-rinks close.

This year is the 12th anniversary of Limerick On Ice in the heart of Limerick City and can be booked at or 061-400-200. Cork on Ice is also well underway and still has some sessions left to book.

Saturday and Sunday sessions begin at 10:30am and the last session is at 9pm. All sessions last 50 minutes.

Wednesdays are Student’s Day where those with a valid student card get to skate in any session for €10 only. People are advised to buy their tickets online on and there is also an online discount. Peak ticket prices are €16 for an adult, €15 for a child or €49 for a family of four. Off-peak ticket prices are typically €2 cheaper per ticket.

5. Concert Blitz

A diverse selection of world class Irish and international musicians to tour to 21 towns and villages across 14 counties in more than 40 concerts from January to May as part of Music Network’s Spring 2016 season.

From the best of Irish traditional music and celebrations of Shakespeare and the song, to one of classical music’s brightest stars and foot-stomping folk music, there’s something for everyone. Details at
