Advice on treating gout, giving up cigarettes, and explaining free radicals

Gout is caused by a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints and tissues, resulting from an excess of uric acid in the bloodstream, along with an inability to break down uric acid. You are correct in your observations, as drinking sufficient water (usually around two litres daily) will help to dilute the uric acid.
Cutting back on organ meats, herring, mackerel, trout, and meat or yeast extracts (Bovril, Marmite) is also a good idea, as these foods are high in purines, which break down into uric acid. You may also have noticed that caffeine and alcohol can trigger an episode of gout, since they interfere with the ability of the body to excrete uric acid via the kidneys and bladder.
