The Crossing offers voyage of undiscovery, playing very cool with big emotional baggage

ANDREW MILLER’S latest work is at one level quite a simple story — girl meets boy, girl and boy split up, girl goes on a voyage. 

Miller approaches each sentence like a craftsman, in particular when Maud takes to the sea.

That main section has the kind of sensory minutiae that gives a sense of what it is to be on the boat sailing into the unknown.
