The Shape I’m In: Aoibheann McCaul

IT’S the morning after Aoibheann McCaul’s first appearance on RTÉ 2’s mockumentary Hardy Bucks.

The Shape I’m In: Aoibheann McCaul

Playing the role of a “bonkers sex addict”, she has yet to check the response to the show online, admitting she was totally out of her “comfort zone”.

Days earlier, she went as far as to post a video on her Twitter page urging her parents and boyfriend not watch the show.

In the end, she watched it with her boyfriend, saying “it was grand” but warns the script “gets worse”.

Poured into a tiny black dress with lots of cleavage on show, she is every inch the pouting temptress on screen.

The role couldn’t be more different from that of independent-minded Caoimhe who she plays on Fair City, but the timing and contrast was perfect.

“The parts are not at all similar — it was easy to switch between them. At the time when I was filming Hardy Bucks, I was also filming a very heavy storyline in Fair City around a miscarriage. It was good to have a complete release from it,” she says.

From Malahide, her long-term boyfriend Brian Farrell gave her a birthday present of a maltese poodle two years ago. Christened Bailey, the dog is the light of her life and a constant companion: “I just think everyone should have one,” she says.

Aoibheann is an ambassador for COPD Support Ireland, which is hosting a Save Your Breath awareness campaign on November 18. A nationwide health check-in tour will coincide with the event, details at www.saveyourbreath.ie.

What shape are you in?

At the moment, I am not in great shape. I’ve just come back from a cruise and a week in New York. I over indulged the whole time. Usually I am quite athletic, If I’m being good, I go the gym four to five times a week. The sessions are about 45 minutes long. I hate cardio. I need things to be constantly changing. You’ll get in much better shape, much faster by using weights instead of running every day. I just do what’s efficient.

What are your healthiest eating habits?

Generally, I try and follow a low-carb, high-protein diet. But that wouldn’t mean no carbs. I would still eat porridge and sweet potato. I don’t feel great after eating lots of starchy white carbs. When I’m busy at work, I find using a Nutribullet to make a green smoothie really helps. Sometimes if I come in and I’m starving, I will put on the chicken and the eggs or whatever and forget about vegetables if I’m tired. But at least if I drink a smoothie during the day — I know that I’ve hit my five a day and more.

What are your guiltiest pleasures?

Probably jelly beans. I’m so obsessed with them I have a ranking system of where my favourite jelly beans are from — at the moment they are the ones you get at the Candy Cane in Tesco. They would be closely followed by the ones you get in Lidl.

Before, I only really cared about jellies, but now I love crisps and chocolate too.

What would keep you awake at night?

My mind. I find it very hard to switch off. Whatever I have to do the next day — whether it’s important or not — I generally just can’t stop thinking.

How do you relax?

I walk my dog — I love bringing her to the beach. I like to get head massages from my boyfriend. I also love going the cinema and going to the gym.

What’s your favourite smell?

I love coffee and cut grass. I have various different perfumes that would remind me of things. I love the smell of my boyfriend.

What would you like to change about your appearance?

I’d like if my skin tanned. I burn and go back straight to pale. Also, for my hair to remain eternally coloured and never to go grey And I’d love to have curly hair — that’s my dream. I love ridiculously big curly hair. My normal hair is straight and limp.

When is the last time you cried?

Probably at something really soppy on the TV. I would cry very easily watching shows. I cried while watching The Intern.

What traits do you least like in others?

I don’t like people who are selfish and lacking in compassion.

What traits do you least like about yourself?

I’m impatient and I over think everything.

Do you pray?

Not to God. I was in the Vatican recently and St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and I talked to my granny — Peggy O’Donoghue. I feel she can hear me.

What would cheer up your day?

My dog — she always cheers up my day. No matter what.
