Fantastic Mr Dahl: McDonald’s is set to give away 700,000 Roald Dahl books with Happy Meals purchased over the next six weeks.

Online and in the shops

All 88 McDonald’s outlets around Ireland are participating in the Happy Readers initiative, which runs until November 3.

TV presenter Emma O’Driscoll is supporting the campaign and will be taking part in book reading events around the country, including McDonald’s in Ballincollig, from 4-5pm on October 9; www.mcdonalds.ie

Tea tree oil:

Known for its blemish-beating effects, tea tree oil is one of The Body Shop’s bestsellers, with one bottle being sold every eight minutes.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, its three most popular tea tree products — essential oil, facial wash and toner — are available in limited edition super sizes.

As well as soothing the skin, tea tree’s antiseptic and anti-fungal properties mean it is often recommended for a variety of household uses — for example, as a treatment for dandruff or to help repel head lice. Tea Tree Oil 20ml is €13.50; www.thebodyshop.ie

Multi-vitamins:

As children settle back into school and after-school activities, a multivitamin can provide a little extra nutritional support, especially if they are fussy eaters.

Vivioptal Junior, €9.95, is an orange-flavoured supplement providing 12 essential vitamins and seven trace minerals.

Suitable for children aged one and over, it’s sugar and gluten-free; www.scopehealthcare.ie

Open book:

Children’s books are now outselling adult fiction at Eason.

“It’s been over 10 years since books like Twilight and the final Harry Potter novels exploded onto the scene with darker, more grown-up content in children’s books,” said David O’Callaghan, youth book buyer at Eason.

“Since then, the young adult book market has grown exponentially with books like Hunger Games, The Fault In Our Stars and Divergent becoming household names.”

He was speaking at the launch of DeptCon 1, Ireland’s first young adult book convention.

The two-day conference will see 23 bestselling authors including Patrick Ness, Louise O’ Neill, Darren Shan and Derek Landy, take part in panel discussions, Q&As, and

signings. DeptCon 1 takes place on October 23 and 24 at the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin. Tickets are €30 on
