This depressed and orphaned wombat makes an unusual best friend
Tonka was just a baby when his mother was hit by a car and killed.
Since then, he has suffered a second heartache, after a cyclone hit his home, off the coast of Townsville.
This caused the wombat to be diagnosed with clinical depression.
Staff of the Australian sanctuary, Billabong have taken the seven-year-old wombat under their wing, but there’s nothing that will comfort him more than his teddy bear.
Tonka’s handler, Samantha Sherman, says they have to replace his stuffed toy quite often because of the wear and tear from constant cuddling.
The adorable animal is rarely seen without his cuddly companion.
She says: "Many orphaned animals take comfort in cuddling teddies and Tonka just never grew out of it - he’s really just a big baby at heart.
"The teddy doesn’t have a name because he gets new ones when needed.
"He has big teeth so over time, as he carries his teddy around, it gets some tears".
