McCathie escaped with his life aged 14 after he was struck by lightning on a boat trip.

This week, the Nova Scotia native beat the 13,983,816-to-one odds to collect a CAN$1m prize with his co-worker Diana Miller.

Speaking to CTV, the lottery winner explained his dice with death: "I was trying to lock the boat up, it was a very sunny day, there was one big, white cloud in the sky and the lightning bolt came through the trees and hit me."

Unbelievably, Peter's daughter was also hit by lightning a couple of years ago. The odds of all three events happening in one lifetime have been calculated at 1.26 trillion-to-one.

Peter now plans to use his winnings to bring his wife (who hasn't been struck by lightning - yet) on a second honeymoon.
