A rally by white supremacists in Columbia city last weekend added to the feeling of strain in racial relations in the area following the Charleston shootings which saw nine black people shot dead by neo-Nazi sympathiser Dylann Roof.
The racist-associated symbolism behind the confederate flag has also been heightened and debate rages as to whether it is acceptable to fly it.
not an uncommon example of humanity in SC: Leroy Smith helps white supremacist to shelter & water as heat bears down. pic.twitter.com/GoF23r3mRe— rob godfrey (@RobGodfrey) July 18, 2015
This pic was taken by the Governer Nikki Haley deputy chief of staff Rob Godfrey at the rally and shows police officer Leroy Smith kindly leading an old man who was suffering in the heat into the shade.
Nothing strange about that, except Officer Smith is black and and the man he is helping is a swastika t-shirt wearing white supremacist.
