Exciting recent bidding, with more on the horizon

The sale of Archdeacon Tom Duggan’s military cross, OBE and Second World War medals at Woodwards in Cork last week demonstrates the power of an exceptional lot.

Exciting recent bidding, with more on the horizon

It drew military historian bidders on the internet from the UK before being knocked down to a buyer in the room for €8,000 on the hammer.

The lure of an exceptional medal is potent and the sale at Cork Auction Rooms tomorrow has thrown up some Cork sporting medal rarities in silver and gold.

A 1907 Macroom Football Club medal, one from the Coachford Tournament of 1896 and a Co Cork Championship medal made by Egans of Cork will be sold as one lot estimated at €200-€300. The sale includes a Boer War medal awarded to D Barry.

Another exceptional piece in this 550 lot auction is an unusual steel-framed rocking chair manufactured by RWWinfield and Co.

Designed by Peter Cooper (New York 1793-1883) of the Canton Iron Works, Baltimore, USA, it was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London and shown again at the London International Exhibition of 1862.

Viewing at Cork Auction Rooms 10am to 6pm today, and 9am to the start of the sale at noon tomorrow.
