J.K. Rowling announced the play on Twitter this morning.
I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year.— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015
It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself. #CursedChild— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015
I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans. #CursedChild— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015
The author did however answer the question we're all thinking; why not another book? Among a string of tweets on the social media platform she said it was the only proper medium to get the story across.
Fans seem pretty excited and have taken over Twitter this morning.
Apologies to everyone who heard me go "SQUEEEEEEEEEE" over the #CursedChild news.— Stephen Daisley (@JournoStephen) June 26, 2015
#CursedChild will be 19 years after the Philosopher's Stone was first published...— lucy (@Otter_Patronus) June 26, 2015
..."19 Years Later".
And just in case this news wasn't great enough, it's coming on a very special anniversary.
