Best recent book: Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey. A brilliant murder mystery set across two different time periods, which manages to be both an intriguing study of love and loss and a mediation on the debilitating effects of dementia on a person and their family.

Best recent film: Mr Holmes. I’ve always loved the character of Sherlock Holmes and the idea of Ian McKellan playing an older, more vulnerable detective is something I just had to see.
