London welcomes art world to auctions

Masterpiece will live up to its billing once again, says Des O’Sullivan.

London welcomes art world to auctions

This is the London season, when the focus of the global antiques and art market shift to the auctions, exhibitions, and important fairs in Britain.

The Olympia International Art and Antiques Fair, now under way, runs to Sunday, June 28.

The sixth edition of Masterpiece is at the Royal Hospital Chelsea and, from June 25, Christie’s and Sotheby’s will have important sales of Impressionist, modern, and contemporary art with works by Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Auguste Rodin, and LS Lowry.

There will even be a reconstructed Spitfire fighter plane on offer at Christie’s. The art market generated more than half a billion pounds worth of sales during the week of Masterpiece last year and this year promises to be another standout year.

With just 59 lots Sotheby’s contemporary art sale on July 1 has a top pre-sale estimate of over £200m.
