Chinese actor sued by man for her intense stare in a TV show

Rules making it easier to file lawsuits in China are leading to concerns over frivolous claims.

The new rules have been in effect since May 1, nationwide. Since then, cases across China increased by 29 percent when compared with the same period last year. According to the Supreme People's Court, that's just over one million new cases.

One of these cases includes a Shanghai man who is suing actor Zhao Wei for staring at him "too intensely through his TV set" and causing him "spiritual damage".

The plaintiff felt pushed to file the suit after watching a prime-time TV show called 'Tiger Mom', in which the actor plays a strict, doe-eyed mother.

Court officials have yet to confirm whether or not the case has been accepted yet.

Gan Wen, deputy head of a case-filing chamber under the Supreme Court, said at a news conference Tuesday that the Zhao case was an example of citizens abusing their right to file lawsuits.

"It's not necessary to waste our judicial resources on cases like these," Gan said.
