Six things to do in the week ahead

The first Ocean to City - Cork Harbour Festival starts today with An Rás Mór, the 28km rowing race that starts at 10am at Crosshaven RCYC and ends in Cork Harbour. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the journey as everything from traditional wooden working boats, currachs, skiffs, gigs and longboats to contemporary ocean racing shells, kayaks and canoes take to the water. It is one of 40 events taking place over the week-long celebration of all things maritime. As part of Cork Harbour Open Day, there will also be free family entertainment, battle re-enactments and guided tours on Spike Island and on Camden Fort Meagher. The public can also discover the city’s quays in a kayak, explore a real Naval vessel, enjoy a free Cork Harbour Boat Tour, watch rescue demonstrations by the RNLI, make a model boat from recycled materials and master the art of crab fishing. www.corkharbourfestival.com.
