Fox5NY - which covers New York City - took the bizarre decision to blur out the nipples on the Cubist masterpiece during a report on the auction.
Noted art critic Jerry Saltz drew attention to the incident on Twitter, asking:

The decision to blur generated debate on Twitter, with many citing it as a further example of the oversexualisation of women's bodies.

Love how @FOXnews blurred the nipples of the 9 million 'Women of Algiers' by Picasso... how pathetic it is. pic.twitter.com/eg4Z1HaqgS

Glad I didn't pay 9 million for a Picasso painting that was "retouched" by a Fox News employee. What a ripoff! ;) pic.twitter.com/pe7GU9Rmlh
