VIDEO: South African news reporter mugged on-camera
SABC contributing editor Vuyo Mvoko was standing outside the Millpark Hospital in Johannesburg with foreign editor Sophie Mokoena and journalist Chriselda Lewis when they were approached by two men.
They at first resisted the men's demands to hand over their valuables but when it became clear that one of the men was armed, Mvoko and the others handed over their laptops, money and phones.
While the muggers got away, the police investigation is likely to be helped by the fact that their faces are clearly visible on camera.
Later that evening on SABC, Mvoko described what happened:
"This person comes and I’m like ‘hey, what’s your problem’, you know? And then there were all these strangers I didn’t know. But I was thinking, who could possibly disturb me while they know we are literally seconds before going on air?
But this guy, he was trying to look for my phone and I wasn’t giving him the phone and then he calls the other one who has a gun. So at that point I gave him the phone and he took a laptop."
Police commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba told SABC that police would do everything in their power to apprehend the men.
We are shocked at the brazen nature of this crime. The cameraman managed to film the incident and the faces of the suspects could be clearly seen," he said.
