Police officers form honour guard to say goodbye to beloved canine colleague
Unfortunately, Judge was diagnosed with Cushings disease and over the last few months, his health has deteriorated, with the nine-year-old experiencing vomiting, hair loss and bleeding.
As hard as it was, Franks and his family knew they had to do the humane thing.
Last Friday, Franks took his last walk with his partner and pet into the St. Francis Veterinary Center as 90 other officers from the county's police departments formed a guard of honour and saluted their canine colleague.
"It's about showing respect, but also the people who are here wanted to thank Judge for his service to the community," said Glassboro Sgt. Dan Eliasen, who supervises his department's K-9 division.
"No one has forgotten what he's done -- and that includes protecting his partner and his community"
West Deptford Deputy Chief Sean McKenna told NJ.com that Judge's condition had worsened faster than expected.
"The doctors gave him several months to live. He hasn't been up in a few days. However, today, gave Judge his last bite."
The last bite saw Judge biting on to the protective arm sleeve worn by Franks throughout their training together.
Judge was still holding the sleeve as he and Franks walked into the hospital.
Judge began his career in 2007 before retiring last August. As well as helping apprehend 153 suspects, he also helped recover three guns, three stolen vehicles and around $47,000 (around €41,000) in alleged drug money.
The West Deptford community donated more than $12,000 (€10,000) in just two days to help with the dog's medical bills which the Franks family had been paying for themselves.
"It's great to see everyone and all the departments out here -- the K-9 Association has been very supportive with everything we need," said McKenna.
"Judge was a great dog, a really good dog."
