Spotlight on Irish women modernists at Whyte’s
Revolution by Mary Swanzy (1882-1978) at Whyte’s art auction at the RDS next Monday at 6pm.
THERE are strong examples by Irish women artists at Whyte’s sale at the RDS next Monday at 6pm.
May Guinness and Mary Swanzy, both of whom featured in the acclaimed Analysing Cubism show at IMMA in 2013, are represented in the auction by three particularly striking works.
Still Life by Guinness shows her developing Modernism after studying in Paris with Andre Lhote in the 1920s. It is estimated at €8,000 to €10,000.
Revolution by Swanzy dates to the war year of 1942 and is estimated at €4,000 to €6,000. Bridge by Swanzy dates to 1972 and is a rhythmic work which harks back to her earlier Cubist phase.
Whyte’s sale is on view at the RDS from 10am to 6pm today, tomorrow and Monday.
