Valentine’s Day proposal reunites couple 43 years after divorce

Louis Demetriades "knocked the socks off" 75-year-old Renate Stumpf with the proposal as she worked in Walmart in the States.

Her ex-husband-now-fiance, who drove for five hours from Memphis, can be seen in the video below calmly walking up behind her with a sign saying "Hey, good-looking. Happy Valentine's Day! Will you marry me?"

Renate is clearly gobsmacked and initially declines at first, just to tease him, before accepting his offer.

She said: "43 years is a long time, so I wasn't sure at first, but I will marry him though because he's altered for the better, I've come to appreciate that."

The two had first met when they were both 18, he was a soldier on an army base where she worked in the kitchen, and he obviously liked what he saw.

Renate said: "The first time I ever saw him, he asked me if I could fix him a hamburger. He loved who he saw, so he asked to help me out in the kitchen."

She rebuffed him initially, but he persisted and they eventually married and had two kids. However, they found life hard when they moved to America and it took its toll on their marriage which ended after 13 years.

Renate explained: "We had little economic support, I didn't know whatsoever and I could barely speak English. We started quarreling about every little thing."

They both wed again eventually, but their second partners recently died and Louis got in touch with Renate again in December after connecting with their daughter on Facebook.

Renate said: "When we saw each other again last December, we knew right then we still loved each other for sure. That love has never passed."

The pair are in no hurry though to tie the knot again and they have decided to wait and just enjoy each other's company for a while.

"There's no hurry at my age," Renate said. "God put us together once again, and it couldn't be any other manner after all these years."
