Remnant of house sure to draw interest in Roscommon

Des O’Sullivan reports on an unusual contents’ sale in Roscommon.

The pillared portico from Mote Park House in Co Roscommon, demolished more than 50 years ago, is one of the more unusual lots at a contents sale in Co Galway, tomorrow.

Rescued by the late collector Fr Brian Hanley the portico now lies on the front grounds at Kedagh Park House, Glenamaddy, and is estimated at €10,000 to €15,000.

Mote Park House, seat of the Crofton family, was destroyed by fire in the 1860s and rebuilt. Matthews Auctioneers with P Burke Sherry FitzGerald will offer more than 600 lots from the estate of the late Fr Hanley at Kedagh Park House at 1.30pm tomorrow.

The sale will include a pair of Regency foldover side table on claw supports (€4,000 to €7,000), a Georgian portrait of a gentleman (€700 to €1,200), an early 19th century mahogany bookcase (€3,000 to €5,000), a Regency gilded overmantle (€600 to €900), antique gold sovereigns, rugs, china, porcelain, silver and plate.

Viewing is from 11am to 5pm today and 10am to the auction start tomorrow.
