This baby bankrupted her parents - just by being born

A baby born prematurely to Canadian parents is worth $1M - literally!

Baby Reece was born to Darren Kimmel and Jennifer Huculak while they were holidaying in Hawaii.

Ms Huculak's waters broke on their second day there. She was just six months pregnant at the time.

She spent the next six weeks in a Hawaiian hospital. Reece, who was born nine weeks early, spent the first two months of her life in intensive care.

The couple had purchased travel insurance from Blue Cross for the journey and their doctor said that Ms Huculak was safe to travel.

They believed their travel insurance would cover the medical bills - until the insurance company informed them it would not be covering the medical expenses.

"We are unable to provide coverage for any medical expenses incurred for Ms. Huculak's baby," the insurer stated in a letter.

They claim a bladder infection two months before the pregnancy meant the couple was ineligible to receive coverage.

"Blue Cross said that because I had a bladder infection at four months and hemorrhaged because of that, that they would not cover the pregnancy," said Ms Hucalak.

Mr Kimmel says they won't consider fundraising online to cover the costs.

"We don't want to take other people's money," he said. "People work hard for their money, and I don't feel they should be giving us money.

"Social media has told us to find a lawyer and fight them. I suppose we will.

"I'm hoping that some of this bad publicity will make Blue Cross come forward and say, maybe one of their salesmen made a mistake, and we'll pay the bill."

They couple now face a $950,000 bill and are considering bankruptcy.
