JAZZ FESTIVAL: The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival is already under way, and choruses of ‘not as good as it was’ will (mostly) be drowned out by a whole new generation of revellers at the wide range of offerings.

For jazz-heads, the biggie is Dianne Reeves at the Everyman on Saturday, with Bruce Barth and Ed Cherry also on the same bill.

For others, local heroes the Frank & Walters play their 25th anniversary gig at the Opera House, and 2ManyDjs do their dance mash-ups at the same venue.

June Tabor has cancelled her gig with Quercus at Triskel due to laryngitis, but the venue still has some interesting acts at the weekend.

MUSIC NEWS:

It’s something nobody could have predicted
emerging young band Pink Floyd are about to strip One Direction of one of their sales records.

The Floyd’s forthcoming album, The Endless River is due on November 10 and is about to become Amazon’s most pre-ordered album of all time, a record previously held by 1D. But is it progress?

Elsewhere, Johnny Marr features on fellow-Mancunian Noel Gallagher’s new album, and Kate Tempest is heading the betting to win this year’s Mercury Music Prize, announced on Wednesday.

GIG WISE:

Hip-hop wonder Mos Def, the artist currently known as Yasiin Bey, has announced a gig for Vicar Street in Dublin on November 24.

Another top boundary pusher, Flying Lotus, is due at the same venue on April 19, complete with live band. Annie Mac will be doing her DJ thing at the Twisted Pepper on December 3, while Glass Animals are at the Academy on March 14.

FILM TIPS:

The Triskel in Cork has a triple bill of classic 80s horror movies next weekend, while the IFI will also have its annual Horrorthon offering. At mainstream cinemas, war film fans can see Brad Pitt in Fury from today, while The Book of Life looks like an impressive offering for kids and grown-ups alike.
