A question (& answer) on taste with RTE presenter, Emma O’ Driscoll

Best recent book:

Lacey’s Of Liverpool by Maureen Lee. Set in the 1940’s/ 1950’s.

Best film you’ve seen this year:

I absolutely love horror movies. I wouldn’t say it was the best movie I’ve ever seen but “Annabelle” definitely managed to scare me.

Best recent show/exhibition/performance:

I went to see War Horse at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre and it was incredible. The choreography of the movement of the horse was so realistic that I eventually couldn’t actually see the actors moving him around the stage anymore. They brought him to life and the story was so moving that people were emotional by the end of it.

What formats do you access music?

I usually go to iTunes these days to get my music. It’s the convenience of it that I love and the fact that it’s a permanent copy with no scratches. I still like to pick up CDs at Christmas as presents.

Best piece of music you’ve been listening to lately:

‘Rather Be’ by Clean Bandit. It was my song of the summer and I still love it.

First ever piece of music or art that really moved you:

I fell in love with a painting by Gustav Klimt. It’s the painting of The Kiss. I just think it’s so romantic. I bought it as a wedding gift for a good friend of mine but I also found a silk dress that had the painting printed onto it and loved wearing it to an awards night.

TV viewing:

I’m really enjoying watching box sets at my own convenience and not having to wait a week to find out what happens next. l I really enjoyed the series Call The Midwife. It’s based around the 1950’s era. I’ve been reading books for a while based on earlier decades like the 1940’s and 50’s. I am also addicted to Room To Improve on RTÉ. Dermot Bannon is king. Listen to the man.

Radio listening:

I’m totally hooked to Breakfast Republic on 2fm at the moment. The guys are crazy and brilliant craic. I also think Nicky and Jenny are excellent in the afternoons. Both shows are just great fun.

Best recent break:

I went to Sinead Kennedy’s Wedding in Kenmare and had the best time ever. It’s a gorgeous town and I will definitely visit again. Fab.

Best celebrity encounter:

I was about 13 and I was singing with a traditional Irish group called Sámhlaíocht in Adare Manor. It was a closed event but suddenly we spotted the really famous face of Pierce Brosnan peeping his head into the room to hear us. He waited around until after our performance to congratulate us on it. Pierce Brosnan had just been announced as the new James Bond at the time and we were all awe-struck.

I also met Simon Cowell a few times as I was signed to his label for a while with Six.

Tech habits:

I love watching movies on my iPad and I have become way more techy than I ever imaged I would a few years ago. I used to ask my brother to do pretty much everything computer related for me.

He was the go to computer head in our house but now I’m delighted I’m way more technology savvy that I was before. I’m still in shock at where technology has gone in the past decade and I love it.

Favourite apps:

I use the RTÉjr app with my niece Ava a lot. She loves the different games and preloaded Tv & Radio content for car journeys. For myself, I love What’s App. Being able to share photos and videos with my friends so quickly is just brilliant.

Weekend treat:

My Mam’s Sunday dinner... yum, nothing like it.

Speciality dish if you’re cooking for friends:

I love baking with my nieces and I make mean lemon cupcakes. They actually call me at home and demand that I make them

Unsung hero:

The volunteers for CHI – Children’s Hospitals Ireland. They offer an invaluable help to parents of children in hospital. It can be extremely difficult if parents have more than one child and one of them is sick in hospital for a long time. The volunteers support is vital.

And Darina and Declan Donnelly of Baby Max Wings Of Love Fund for their endless fundraising in memory of their own son Baby Max and donations of vital medical equipment to children’s hospitals nationwide.

You are king for a day – what’s your first decree?

I would order everyone to just PARTY! One day wouldn’t hurt would it? Life’s too short.
